Our food love story
After quitting the corporate world, Gaurav Jain immersed himself in research. He wanted to bring simple home-made food as opposed to the lavish exotic sort to the corporate community.
After 11 months of research on business models, opinion polls, and deciding on the various intricacies like the vendors, the venue, and the brand name, Mast Kalandar started in 2006 in a 3,000 sq. ft. space on Banerghatta road on the outskirts of Bangalore. Pallavi Jain quit her job to support her husband unconditionally and helped build Mast Kalandar to what it is today.
Gaurav says, "We had to understand everything from the working of a kitchen, the sourcing of ingredients, the food storage and the menu. The work that Pallavi put in, from fixing the menu to the daily running of the place has probably been my biggest strength. We have been serving a mixed cuisine from Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. Our USP was home-made food, so freshness was a vital factor.
I was clear that the food had to be cooked fresh every day, and we continue to hold true to this concept. Today, we have over 600 employees who operate out of 45 outlets in four cities - Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. We look forward each day to getting closer to opening 100 stores in the time to come."
